In the United States, Labor Unions have had a long and notorious history with organized crime.  Jimmy Hoffa controlled the Teamsters and the Mafia basically decides what gets built in New York City, to cite just the two most famous examples.  Unions in the United States are not above viciously assaulting strike breakers and physically threatening management.

Does Europe have the same problem?

Italy doesn't count - the Mafia runs the entire country from top to bottom.  Did organized crime ever influence German post war reconstruction?  Is organized crime ever behind the crippling transport strikes that beleaguer France?  Does the Mafia quietly and discretely control large sections of Scandanavia?  Did the coal strikes in England during the 80s have criminal elements?  If not, why does Europe not have the criminal element involved in its Unions? Somehow, I doubt that it is free healtcare since Canada has had similar problems.  Though Canadian union thugs say "Sorry, eh" before they bash your in your skull.
